FACEBOOK!!

For the 3rd emerging technology, I have chosen Facebook.  This is the leading social networking site that, originally, was only for select college campuses. Now, it is open to nearly everyone.  A perfect way to understand the story behind its inception and creation is the movie "The Social Network".  Facebook allows you to create a page that is all about who you are.  What you look like (pictures) where you work, where you have/are going to school, who your friends are, what movies, music, books, and television shows you like.  It is basically who you are in a web page.  You add friends/family to your site and you can restrict access to your facebook as well.  Maybe you only want people you consider a friend to know these details.  Maybe you don't care if the world knows all of these things about you.  Either way, it is a great way to re-connect with friends from the past, distant family members or new friends.  Also, for the psycho stalkers, its a way to know what is going on in that special persons life (weirdo!).  The best way to learn about facebook, is to make a page and mess around with it.  I strongly encourage you to stay away from Farmville and things of that nature.  Because my profile is kept private, I have added a screenshot of my facebook below.

Emerging Technology 2 - Pandora

Pandora is an awesome online music website.  Considered the "Music Genome Project", Pandora lets you list a few artists that  you enjoy and Pandora will then select other artists that have similar music and play it for you.  This helps you become more familiar with artists that you would probably be interested in.  Creating an account with Pandora is easy.  You simply need an email and you can make up the rest as you go.  Once the account is created, you start by adding artists you like and let Pandora do the rest.  Naturally, you are going to come across songs/artists that you don't really like.  A great feature is that you can give a thumbs up or thumbs down to every song played.  This allows for a more personalized style of music that is played. Below is a link. Enjoy!

Yodio!

I am exploring Podcasing - Yodios.  Embedded below is my first "yodio" experience.  While short, I was proud that I was able to A) creat the yodio and B) figure out how to embed it.  Podcasting is an awesome new emerging technology.  It allows the creator to send a message electronically to those who want to follow.  People can choose their own content and focus on what they want to hear.  I would compare Podcasting to radio, much like TV to a DVR.  On a radio, you can tune in, but only hear what the DJ is playing at that time.  Same with TV, you can flip a channel but it consists of whatever the station is playing at that time.  With podcasting and DVR, you can choose what you want, when you want it.  My first experience using Yodio was difficult.  I thought I was cool and would skip all of the instructions and just "figure it out".  Twenty five minutes later I went back and read the directions and produced what you have below.  In reading the directions, it is very easy to use.  No crazy expensive equipment needed (I used my cell phone to record the message!).  With that, my biggest tip would be the read the instructions, follow the directions and keep the first try as simple as possible.

Del.icio.us !!

Below is the link to my new del.icio.us account!  I have never used it before so be gentle in your criticisms.  My favorite thing about this site is I can search a specific tag and find resources that I may not have found otherwise.  Someone else put in the work to find it and tag it and now we all share the fruits of their labor.

1st Blog!

Hello!  My name is Joe Clagg and I am a Senior at IUPUI studying Criminal Justice.  I am married with 2 boys, ages 7 & 6.  So creating this blog actually turned out to be a bit harder than I anticipated.  All of the different options and layouts made creating this quickly difficult.   If I am offering advice, make a blog that is as basic as possible to get it up and running, then go through afterwards and play with the options.  Trying to figure it all out from the very beginning wasn't a good idea for me.  The title of my blog "You fight great, but I'm a great fighter" comes from the movie "Rocky III" said by Apollo Creed.  I LOVE the Rocky movies and I always thought that quote was awesome.  Naturally he was referring to boxing but I think the idea can be applied to just about any situation.  The first picture is of my wife and I at the Smiley Adult Prom and the other picture I uploaded is a painting and was created by Leroy Neiman and is of Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed.
